Layman's Guide to Cancer - Part 3 - Cancer Causes and Risk Factors

Cancer is a multifactorial disease, which means cancer develops due to a number of factors and not just a single factor. Vast research has been done and the understanding of the cancer has increased tremendously in the previous 3 to 4 decades regarding the various factors at play. But all of them have not been identified and still more research is needed for the same.

A term which is used quite often when talking about the cause of cancer is Risk factor. A risk factor is one which increases the probability of a person developing cancer. The person with a risk factor is at more risk of being affected by cancer when compared to a person without the risk factor. Avoidance or elimination of these risk factors can decrease the risk of a person developing cancer. risk factors can't be avoided or eliminated totally in some cases. Even in cases where risk factors can't be totally eliminated, minimization of exposure can decrease the risk of developing cancer.

Presence of a risk factors doesn't mean the person will develop cancer. Many with risk factors don't develop cancer at all.

Some of the common risk factors are

  • Old age - Old age is the most important risk factor for most of the cancers. Cancer occurs due to numerous changes in the DNA. These changes occur throughout one's life. Changes to the DNA can occur during cell replication or due to damage to the DNA by environmental factors like sunlight, chemicals or infection by certain organisms. Cells of the body have built in mechanisms to repair these damages. But as a person grows old these repair mechanisms loose their efficiency and the changes accumulate in the cells. So the longer a person lives, more time for the changes to accumulate in the cells and turn cancerous. Hence cancers are common in older people. But people of all age groups can be affected by cancer including children.
  • Exposure to certain chemicals or substances called carcinogens - A carcinogen is a substance or chemical which facilitates the development of cancer in a person exposed to it. Carcinogens can be found at workplaces, in our surroundings and even in our diet also. Tobacco smoke is the most common carcinogen and has been implicated in a number of cancers. Not only people who directly use tobacco but also those who are indirectly exposed to tobacco smoke are also at an increased risk of developing cancer. Not all people exposed to carcinogens develop cancer. Not everybody who smokes develops cancer. This shows there are other factors at play and shows the multifactorial nature of cancer. A person can be exposed to carcionogens at work places, as mentioned above. For example exposure to asbestos, which has been implicated in more than 90% of Mesothelioma [] takes place primarily at work places. Carcinogens may be found in the diet also. When food products like meat are grilled or barbecued minute quantities of carcinogens are formed which are similar to those in tobacco smoke. Some of the additives added to commercially food products may have carcinogenic potential.
  • Genetic predisposition - Sometimes some individuals can inherit certain genetic mutations from their parents. These persons who inherit mutations are at an increased risk of developing cancer. Though the risk is more when compared to a person who hasn't inherited the mutation, it doesn't mean all the people who inherited a mutated gene will develop cancer. With a mutation from the start the chances of the person developing a cancer are slightly raised statistically. This is called genetic predisposition. The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are good examples of genetic predisposition. Women who inherit these genes have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than those who do not. Another finding of interest is the fact that most women with breast cancer do not have mutated BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Less than 5% of the women with breast cancer have these genes. This shows that there are other factors at work for the development of breast cancer.
  • Exposure to sunlight - Ultraviolet rays emitted from sun have been implicated in the development of skin cancer. Tanning booths which are becoming quite popular are also a source of ultraviolet rays and excessive usage of tanning booths can lead to skin cancer. Protection from sunlight using proper clothing, sunscreen and avoidance of tanning booths can greatly reduce the risk of developing skin cancer.
  • Exposure to radiation - Exposure to radiation like x-rays and gamma rays can damage the genes making the cells cancerous. Radiation injury is mainly implicated in leukemia's. Radiation is commonly used in medical field for diagnosis and treatment. The dose of radiation used in diagnostic procedures like x-ray and CT scanning are minimal and the risk associated with these procedures is very minute. But persons handling these kinds of instruments on a regular basis like technicians are to be extra careful and wear the protective clothing. Radiation is also used for the treatment of cancers. This form of treatment, called radiotherapy uses an higher dose of radiation than used for diagnostic procedures. Radiotherapy is associated with a much higher risk than diagnostic procedures like x-ray. It is better to consult your doctor, if you are advised to take radiotherapy, regarding the possible side effects. Most of the times the benefits outweigh the side effects. People living in the vicinity of a nuclear plant or places where atomic bombs are manufactured, tested and used are also at risk of radiation injury. The classic example is people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. People living in these cities continue to experience the effects of radiation injury. Another source of radiation injury is radon gas, which is radioactive. People working in mines are especially at risk of exposure to radon gas. What is Cancer? What Are Its Causes?

What is Cancer?

The term 'Cancer' refers to any one of a large number of diseases in which a group of cells show an abnormal development with an uncontrollable division beyond the normal limits. They have the ability to intrude and destroy adjacent body tissues. Cancer cells have the ability to spread throughout the body via lymph and blood, thus destroying the healthy tissues (process known as invasion).

All the cancers begin in the basic unit of life - the cell. Normal cells in a body have the ability to grow and divide in a controlled way to produce more cells as per needed to keep the body healthy. When the cells become old or damaged, they die and get replaced with new cells. If and when this normal process gets disturbed then cancer gets initiated. In a normal process, old cells die after a certain period of time and are replaced by new cells. But in a cancerous state, new cells keep on developing while old cells do not die when they should thus leading to a mass of tissue known as a tumor.

There are two types of tumors:

1. Benign tumors:
A benign tumor is not cancerous. It can often be removed and usually does not come back. These cells grow in a limited, non-aggressive manner. They do not invade the surrounding tissues and neither spread to other parts of the body, i.e., do not metastasize.

2. Malignant tumors:
A malignant tumor is cancerous. Cells in these tumors invade the surrounding tissues and spread to other parts of the body.

Causes of Cancer

There are certain risk factors which might lead to cancer development. These are:

• Growing Older
• Tobacco
• Sunlight
• Ionizing radiation
• Certain chemicals and other substances
• Some viruses and bacteria
• Certain hormones
• Family history of cancer
• Alcohol
• Poor diet, lack of physical activity, or being overweight

Most of these risk factors can be avoided, while some others, such as family history, cannot be avoided. Wherever and whenever possible, steps can be taken in staying away from known risk factors.

Keep in mind that:

• Not everything causes cancer.
• Cancer is not caused by an injury, such as a bump or bruise.
• Cancer is not contagious. Although being infected with certain viruses or bacteria may increase the risk of some types of cancer, no one can catch cancer from another person.
• Having one or more risk factors does not mean that you will get cancer. Most people who have risk factors never develop cancer.
• Some people are more sensitive than others to the known risk factors.

Growing Older

Age is an important risk factor for cancer. Most cancers occur in people over the age of 65. But people of all ages, including children, can get cancer, too.


Tobacco use highly increases the risk of getting cancer, either it be directly using the tobacco or being around tobacco smoke (secondhand smoke). Smokers are more likely than nonsmokers to develop cancer of the mouth, the organs related to respiratory system and the digestive system. They also are more likely to develop leukemia - cancer that starts in blood cells.

Quitting tobacco reduces the risk of cancer (though cancer risk is generally lowest among those who have never used tobacco). For those who have already had cancer, quitting reduces the chances of cancer recurrence.


Natural source of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the sun. Other sources are sunlamps and tanning booths. It causes early aging of the skin and skin damage that can lead to skin cancer.

Doctors encourage people of all ages to limit their time in the sun and to avoid other sources of UV radiation:

• Try to avoid exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• Stay in the shade if you have to go outside.
• Cover exposed areas of the body.
• Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses with lenses that absorb UV.
• Use sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15. They may help prevent skin cancer.
• Stay away from sunlamps and tanning booths. They are no safer than sunlight.

Ionizing Radiation

Ionizing radiation can cause cell damage that leads to cancer. This radiation comes from rays that enter the Earth's atmosphere from outer space, radioactive fallout, radon gas, x-rays, and other sources.

Radioactive fallout comes from accidents at nuclear power plants or from the production, testing, or use of atomic weapons. People exposed to this fallout may have an increased risk of cancer.

Radon is an invisible, odour-less, tasteless radioactive gas. People working in mines may be exposed to radon.

Another common source of radiation is through medical procedures. Doctors use low-dose radiations for x-rays and high-dose radiations for radiation therapy to treat cancer. The risk of cancer from low-dose x-rays is extremely small as compared to radiation therapy. For both, the benefit nearly always outweighs the small risk.

Talk to your doctor or dentist about the need for each x-ray. Also ask for shields to protect parts of the body that are not in the picture.

Certain Chemicals and Other Substances

Studies show that exposure to asbestos, benzene, benzidine, cadmium, nickel, or vinyl chloride in the workplace can cause cancer. People who have exposure to these things in their workplaces - like painters, construction workers, and those in the chemical industry - have an increased risk of cancer.

Always tend to follow instructions and safety tips when handling harmful substances both at work and at home. Also be careful at home when handling pesticides, used engine oil, paint, solvents, and other chemicals.

Some Viruses and Bacteria

Being infected with certain viruses or bacteria may increase the risk of developing cancer:

• Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) is the main cause of cervical cancer along with some other types of cancer.
• Hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses might develop into liver cancer.
• Human T-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus (HTLV-1)greatly increases the risk of lymphoma and leukemia.
• Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) - commonly known as AIDS. People having HIV infection have a greater risk of cancer - lymphoma and a rare cancer called Kaposi's sarcoma.
• Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been linked to an increased risk of lymphoma.
• Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) is a cause of Kaposi's sarcoma.
• Helicobacter pylorican cause stomach ulcers. It also can cause stomach cancer and lymphoma in the stomach lining.

Certain Hormones

In some health issues, doctors recommend hormone therapy. However, studies show that hormone therapy can cause serious side effects: increases the risk of breast cancer, heart attack, stroke, or blood clots.

Family History of Cancer

A normal cell may become a cancer cell after a series of gene changes occur. Some gene changes that increase the risk of cancer are passed from parent to child. These changes are present at birth in all cells of the body.

It is uncommon for cancer to run in a family. However, several cases of the same cancer type in a family may be linked to inherited gene changes, which increase the chance of developing cancers. However, environmental factors may also be involved. But mostly, multiple cases of cancer in a family are just a matter of chance.

Talk to your doctor if you think you may have a pattern of a certain type of cancer in your family. Your doctor may suggest ways to try to reduce your risk of cancer and also may suggest exams for early detection of cancer.

Ask your doctor about genetic testing to check certain inherited gene changes that might increase the chance of developing cancer. But remember, inheriting a gene change does not mean that you will definitely develop cancer. It means that you have an increased chance of developing the disease.

Poor Diet, Lack of Physical Activity, or Being Overweight

People who have a poor diet, do not have enough physical activity, or are overweight may be at increased risk of several types of cancer.

Breast Cancer - Detection, Treatments and Prevention

Breast cancer is the number one disease that women in the United States fear the most, and for compelling reasons. It is the leading cause of death among women between 40 and 55 years of age and is the second overall cause of death among women (exceeded only by lung cancer). Unfortunately, it is also on the rise worldwide. According to the American Cancer Society, this year about 175,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer and about 43,300 deaths from breast cancer will occur among women in the USA.

Breast cancer is a rapid, uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in one or both breasts. It is life-threatening because it quickly spreads to vital organs.

The years since World War II have seen a tremendous increase in the incidence of breast cancer, so efforts on identifying its causes often focus on changes in our society that have occurred since then, such as the increased use of pesticides, the advent of birth control pills, changes in diet, and different styles and materials in women's clothing. Researchers have identified lots of risk factors (such as age, diet, cigarette smoking, alcohol intake, and family history), but the specific causes of breast cancer remain elusive.

Cancers are divided into different groups, called stages, based on whether the cancer is invasive or non-invasive, the size of the tumor, how many lymph nodes are involved, and whether there is spread to other parts of the body. The stages identify tumor types that have a similar outlook and are treated in a similar way. There are five main stages of breast cancer. If breast cancer is detected in its early stages, the 5 year survival rate is greater than 95%.

Breast cancer is more easily treated and often curable if it is found early. Monthly breast self-examinations should begin at age 20. Recommended screening methods include breast self-examination and mammography. A mammogram is the most effective way to find breast cancer early, up to 2 years before the lump is even large enough to feel. Sometimes a doctor will discover a lump in a woman's breast during a routine examination or a patient might come to the doctor with questions about a lump she found. If clinical examination and mammography both reveal benign findings, biopsy may be unnecessary.

Treatment for breast cancer usually depends on the type of cancer and whether the cancer has spread outside of the breast to the rest of the body. Treatment options include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and endocrine/anti-hormone therapy. Treatment usually starts with anticancer drugs, or chemotherapy. The prognosis (chance of recovery) and treatment options depend on the stage of the cancer, the size of the tumor and whether it is in the breast only or has spread to lymph nodes or other places in the body. It's very important to diagnose inflammatory breast cancer quickly so that treatment can begin. After surgery, radiation treatment is used to try to kill any remaining cancer cells.

Possible surgical treatments are either a mastectomy (complete removal of the breast) or breast conserving therapy. Even if a mastectomy is needed (about 30-40% of patients need this), building a new breast, called reconstruction, offers a natural looking breast replacement. Breast-conserving surgery (which removes only some of your breast) often works just as well as a mastectomy (which removes all of your breast).

Mammograms can detect tumors in the earliest stages, however, a standard mammogram can miss 15-20% of cancerous tumors. Heightened awareness of breast cancer risk in the past decades has led to an increase in the number of women undergoing mammography for screening, leading to detection of cancers in earlier stages and a resultant improvement in survival rates.

Research suggests that routine exercise may help prevent breast cancer. No one knows the exact causes of breast cancer, but research has shown that women with certain risk factors are more likely than others to develop the disease. Researchers at Stanford University and the National Institutes of Health, for example, found that high concentrations of the IGF-1 hormone stimulate cancer cell growth.

Up to 10 percent of breast cancer patients eventually suffer a recurrence in the other breast. Simple mammograms often miss small tumors, the researchers from the American College of Radiology Imaging Network found, while MRIs rarely miss them.

The cause of breast cancer is unknown. Early detection of breast cancer is therefore vital as it increases the chances of successful treatment. The chance of a woman in her 40s developing breast cancer is about one in 70, whereas the risk of a woman in her 80s developing breast cancer is one in 25. When breast cancer is confined to the breast the five year survival rate is over 95%. For women aged 40-49, the evidence that screening mammography reduces mortality from breast cancer is weaker, and the absolute benefit of mammography is smaller, than it is for older women.

The good news is that breast cancer is a disease that can be treated and cured. More than 90 out of 100 women whose breast cancer is found early will be cured. Cancer found at a later stage, however, may be less likely to be cured. While there is still no cure for the disease, the experts and leading organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Doctors and scientists are working on finding cures for all types of breast cancer. Finding and treating breast cancer early is the best way to increase your chances of survival and cure.

Stem Cells and Cancer

The idea that cancer arises from stem cells was first proposed over 150 years ago as the embryonal rest theory of cancer. However, by the beginning of the 20 th century, the embryonal rest theory of cancer was discarded, and the hypothesis that cancer arises from de-differentiation became generally accepted. Then, about 50 years ago, studies on cancers of germinal tissue (teratocarcinomas) re-established the principles that cancer arises from stem cytes, and that cancer could be treated by induction of differentiation (differentiation therapy). However, teratocarcinomas were considered exceptions to the rule, and the de-differentiation theory of origin remained generally accepted for most cancers until the 1980 s. Then studies on the cellular origin of cancer during experimental chemical hepatocarcinogenesis showed that hepatocellular cancer did not arise from de differentiation of hepatocytes, as was generally believed, but rather from maturation arrest of cytes in the hepatocyte lineage. The re-emergence of the cell theory of cancer preceded the current excitement in cancers.

Over the last 10 years, differentiation therapy has been applied with great success to cancer of the blood cytes (leukemias) by inactivation of the signaling pathways that allow the leukemic transit-amplifying to continue to proliferate and not die (maturation arrest). Differentiation therapy of cancer is now proposed through the use of small inhibitory molecules or inhibitory RNAs (iRNAs) to block the signals that maintain ''stemness'' so that the leukemic tissues are allowed to differentiate. Conventional chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and anti-angiogenic therapies act on the carcinomoa. When these therapies are discontinued, the cancer will re- form from the therapy-resistant cancer. Successful differentiation therapy of cancer cells would force these cells to differentiate, so that they can no longer re-establish the cancer.

The cell of origin of all tissues is called a stem cell. From this one all other cells arise. The fertilized ovum is the primordial for all of the tissues of the human body. The immediate progeny of the primordia are embryonic stem cells, which, in turn, give rise to tissues. It is from these tissues that most cancers arise.

Normal tissue and cancer tissue contain the same populations:

stem cells,

transit-amplifying cells,

and terminally differentiated cells.

Normal tissue renewal and growth of cancer are both accomplished by division of the transit-amplifying cells. Usually, the stem cells of both normal tissue and cancers are relatively few in number, compared to the transit-amplifying and the terminally differentiated cells, and they do not participate in proliferation. The proliferating ones of both cancers and normal tissue are the transit-amplifying cells. Cancer tissue differs from normal tissue in that the transit-amplifying cells accumulate in cancer, whereas in normal tissue differentiate so that they no longer divide (terminal differentiation).

One of the best examples of the normal cellular lineage and also of the contribution of maturation arrest to cancer is skin. The pluripotent skin epidermal stem cells are located in the bulb of the hair follicle. The epidermis-committed stem cells are located in the basal layer of the skin (germinativum) and are much fewer in number than the transit-amplifying carcinoma is located in the spinosum layer. Maturation is accomplished through the accumulation of cytokeratin, which becomes prominent in the granular layer. The granules contain cytokeratin. The cytoplasm of the cells in the granular layer becomes filled with these granules and eventually the cells lose their structure, forming the outer layer of acellular keratin, known as the corneum.

Skin cancers arise by maturation arrest at various levels of differentiation of the epidermis. Maturation arrest of the primitive skin progenitor tissue in the bulge of the hair follicle gives rise to trichoepitheliomas, which vary in cellular differentiation but usually contain both keratitic and basal regions, as well as clear cells characteristic of hair follicle. Cells in the basal layer may give rise to basal cell carcinomas or squamous cell carcinomas. Overexpression of Ras in the more highly determined basal cells of the skin produces squamous cell carcinoma, and induced expression of the c-myc gene in the non-proliferative suprabasal cells reactivates the cell cycle and leads to hyperplasia (papillomas). Papillomas do not progress to invasive tumors. Examination of the cellular populations in skin cancer demonstrates that the malignant cells can also differentiate, but that the proliferative transit-amplifying cells of the cancer do not uniformly do so, unlike normal skin tissue.

The difference between normal tissue renewal and cancer growth is that the number of cells that are produced by cellular division in normal tissue essentially equals the number of cells that terminally differentiate in a given time period, so that the total number of cells remains constant. In contrast, in cancers, the proliferating transit-amplifying cells do not all terminally differentiate, and the number of cells in the cancer increases. These in both normal tissue renewal and cancer growth consist of a small fraction of cellular population that are not actively proliferating, and that fraction serves as a cellular reserve population. When a tissue stem cell divides, it gives rise to one daughter cyte that remains a stem cell and one daughter cell that begins the process of differentiation by becoming a transit-amplifying cell (asymmetric division); thus, the stem cells remain in the tissue for long periods of time, essentially the lifetime of the organism. The number of cells in a cancer increases with time, because the transit-amplifying cells give rise to two cells that do not mature and retain the potential to divide (symmetric division) or the mature cells do not die or both.

Attempts to culture cells from normal tissues and cancers were well underway in the 1950 s, and there were even some early studies suggesting that normal tissues contain stem cells with malignant potential. It was found that malignant cells could be derived from normal rat myocardium (fibroblasts) if the cells were cultured for a long time in anaerobic conditions. Most normal tissue cells do not survive under these conditions, and normal tissue contains rare cells. with the potential for malignant change under selected culture conditions.

Colon Cancer Screening and Medical Malpractice

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of deaths resulting from cancer. Every year, approximately 48,000 people will die in the U.S. from colon cancer. Many of these deaths would be prevented with early detection and treatment through routine colon cancer screening.

Colon Cancer Progresses Through Stages

The stage of the colon cancer determines the appropriate treatment and determines the patient's relative 5-year survival rate which is the percentage of colon cancer patients who live at least 5 years after being diagnosed. Colon cancer progresses in stages as follows:

  • Stage 0: The disease starts as a small non-cancerous growth, called a polyp, in the colon. Some of these polyps become precancerous, and over time, turn cancerous. Growth has not progressed beyond the inner layer (mucosa) of the colon.
  • Stage 1: The cancer has started to work its way through the first layers of the colon - the mucosa and the submucosa.
  • Stage 2: The cancer has advanced beyond the first two layers of the colon and is spreading deeper through the wall of the colon into the muscularis and the serosa but is not in the lymph nodes or distant organs.
  • Stage 3: The cancer has spread to one or more of the nearby lymph nodes.
  • Stage 4: The cancer has spread to other organs (typically the liver or the lungs).

Screening for Colon Cancer

In order to detect colon cancer early, everyone, even individuals who are not at high risk, that is, with no symptoms and with no family history of colon cancer, should be screened. Cancer specialists suggest that screening for such individuals start at age 50 and consist of tests that detect colon cancer in the body:

  • Colonoscopy, at least every ten years,
  • Sigmoidoscopy, at least every 5 years,
  • Double-contrast Barium Enema, at least every 5 years, or
  • Virtual Colonoscopy (computed tomographic colonography), at least every 5 years

These tests allow a doctor to actually see the growth or cancer inside the colon. The frequency at which these tests are repeated depends on what is found during the procedure.

Cancer specialists also recommend tests that look for blood in the stool, such as:

  • Annual Guaiac-based Fecal Occult Blood Test (gFOBT)

Such tests detect the presence of blood from tumors in the stool. Generally these tests are not as effective at detecting colon cancer as those that detect cancer in the body.

Stage of Colon Cancer Determines Treatments and Relative 5-Year Survival Rates

If the disease is detected as a small polyp during a routine screening test, such as a colonoscopy, the polyp can usually be taken out during the colonoscopy without the need for the surgical removal of any of the colon.

When the polyp becomes a tumor and reaches Stage 1 or Stage 2, the tumor and a portion of the colon on both sides is surgical removed. The relative 5-year survival rate is over 90% for Stage 1 and 73% for Stage 2.

If the disease advances to a Stage 3, a colon resection is no longer sufficient and the patient also needs to undergo chemotherapy. The relative 5-year survival rate drops to 53%, depending on such factors as the number of lymph nodes that contain cancer.

By the time the colon cancer reaches Stage 4, treatment may require the use of chemotherapy and other drugs and surgery on multiple organs. If the size and number of tumors in other organs (such as the liver and lungs) are small enough, surgery may be the initial treatment, followed by chemotherapy. In some cases the size or number of tumors in the other organs takes away the option of surgery as the initial treatment. If chemotherapy and other drugs can reduce the number and size of these tumors, surgery may then become an option as the second form of treatment. If not, chemotherapy and other drugs (possibly through clinical trials) may temporarily stop or reduce the continued spread of the cancer. The relative 5-year survival rate drops to approximately 8%.

As the relative 5-year survival rates indicate, the time frame in which colon cancer is detected and treated makes a dramatic difference. If detected and treated early, the individual has an excellent chance of surviving the disease. As detection and treatment is delayed, the odds start turning against the individual so that by the time the colon cancer progresses to Stage 3, the percentage is almost even. And the odds drop precipitously when the colon cancer reaches Stage 4.

Failure to Screen for Colon Cancer May Constitute Medical Malpractice

Unfortunately, all too often doctors do not recommend routine colon cancer screening to their patients. By the time the cancer is discovered - often because the tumor has grown so large that it is causing blockage, because the patient has unexplained anemia that is getting progressively worse, or because the patient begins to notice other symptoms - the colon cancer has already advanced to a Stage 3 or even a Stage 4. The individual now faces a much different prognosis than if the cancer had been detected early through routine screening. In medical malpractice terms, the individual has suffered a "loss of chance" of a better recovery. That is to say, because the doctor did not advise the individual to undergo routine screening, the cancer is now much more advanced and the individual has a much reduced chance of surviving the cancer. The failure of a doctor to advise the individual about screening options for colon cancer may constitute medical malpractice.

Strategies to Prevent Cancer

According to the World Health Organization, more than 11 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year. It is estimated that there will be 16 million new cases every year by 2020. The World Cancer Research Foundation (WCRF) recommends that the single most important lifestyle behavior influencing the onset of cancer is diet. Continuing, the WCRF emphasizes that eating at least five portions of vegetables and fruits each day could, in itself, reduce cancer rates by 20%. WCRF also reports that eating healthily, plus staying physically active and maintaining a healthy weight, could cut cancer risk by 30-40%.

Along with dietary considerations, other preventive measures may indeed delay the onset of cancer. In this article, we present potential preventive strategies for consideration.

Butt Out. According to the US National Cancer Institute, cigarette smoke contains about 4,000 chemicals including over 60 carcinogens (cancer-causing agents). In addition, many of these substances, such as carbon monoxide, tar, arsenic, and lead, are poisonous and toxic to the human body. Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of cancer.

Meats and Sweets Are Not Healthy Treats. Dietary factors, second only to tobacco as a preventable cause of cancer, account for about 30% of all cancers in Western countries and approximately 20% in developing countries. Announcing findings in 2005 of its 20-year-long study tracking 150,000 Americans, the American Cancer Society found that men and women who ate the most amounts of red meat (as compared to those who ate more poultry, fish, and non-meats) had a 53% higher risk of distal colon cancer. Also in 2005, a study by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Health (USA), in which 1 million Koreans were tracked for 10 years, reported that high sugar consumption could be a risk factor in developing several types of cancer. These researchers suggest that glucose intolerance may be one way that obesity increases cancer risk and that rising obesity rates may increase future cancer rates.

Bean-Nutty to Fight Cancer. A compound found in everyday foods can slow the development of cancerous tumors. A 2005 study conducted by scientists at the University College of London's Sackler Institute (United Kingdom) found that inositol pentakisphosphate can inhibit an enzyme that is necessary for tumors to grow. Each day, try to eat foods rich in inositol pentakisphosphate: 1 cup (226 gm) of beans (such as lentils and peas), 1/2 cup (113 gm) of nuts (almonds, and hazelnuts [filberts] are also good sources of Vitamin E - see Tip 31) and 6 ounces (170 gm) of whole-wheat cereals (for the wheat bran).

Prevent Prostate Problems. Prostate cancer is a major cause of death among men. It has claimed the lives of 56,000 European men (1998), along with 29,900 American men (2004). To-date, there have been no obvious preventive strategies, however in 2005 scientists from the Northern California Cancer Center (USA) proposed that Vitamin D may cut prostate cancer risk. The researchers found that in men with certain gene variants, high sun exposure reduced prostate cancer risk by as much as 65%. Previous research has shown that the prostate uses Vitamin D, which the body manufactures from exposure to sunlight, to promote the normal growth of prostate cells and to inhibit the invasiveness and spread of prostate cancer cells to other parts of the body. The scientists propose that men may benefit by increasing Vitamin D intake from diet and supplements (whereas excessive exposure to sunlight may result with the negative effect of sun-induced skin cancer). Foods rich in Vitamin D include egg yolks, liver, and cod liver oil, and margarine and cereals are often fortified with this nutrient as well.

Women Be Wary. While the Pap Smear is a test that doctors routinely conduct to check women for cervical cancer, the Pap may not find abnormal cells in the cervix until cancer already has developed. A new test, the human papilloma virus (HPV) test, detects elevated levels of the infectious pathogen that is the cause of nearly all cases of cervical cancer. HPV is harbored by an estimated 80% of sexually active adults, but the majority of infections clear up without incident. If you are younger than 30, experts now recommended that you have the HPV test if your Pap Smear test is unclear. If you are 30 or older, experts recommend you have the HPV test at the same time as your Pap test. A new vaccine for cervical cancer is now available. The vaccine targets HPV types 16 and 18, thought to cause 70% of cervical cancers, and HPV types 6 and 11, associated with 90% of genital warts cases.

Some of the cancers now most common in Europe, North America and Australasia are known to be largely preventable. It is now apparent that, although genetic predisposition varies, the key factors determining whether or not people develop cancer are environmental. The two most important ways to reduce cancer risk are the avoidance of cancer-causing agents, of which tobacco is by far the most lethal, but which also include biological agents, viruses and bacteria, and the habitual consumption of diets high in those foods and drinks that protect against cancer."

I Read It, I Get It, But I Refuse To Accept It - A Survivors Response To The IARC Report On Cancer

Whenever anyone shows up to the party with bad news I always question the news they bring. Some people are like that, they really don't wish to see anyone having a good time so they tell you about the orphanage that burnt down or how bad the economy is or how bleak our future looks.

When the persons doing the talking are supposed to be the experts on the subject you are almost forced to take what is being said for granite. Thus what you have is optimism being oppressed by reality, a truly sad state of affairs.

Such is the case of the International Agency For Research on Cancer (IARC) and their report on the 20 year outlook for cancer fatalities.

The IARC is I believe an arm of the United Nations. ( No not where all the superheroes live, that's the justice league.) The article came out of London last week and boldly states that fatalities from cancer will double by the year 2030 with my arch nemesis, lung cancer, leading the way. Here's a startling little fact for you from the article, in 2008, lung cancer was the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer worldwide at 1.61 million cases. Lung cancer also accounted for the most fatalities at 1.38 million. Let's see a little quick math and that's roughly a 14 % survival rate if you are a true optimist. The overall figure of all cancers combined for 2008, 12.7 million diagnosed with 7.6 million fatalities. Now fast forward twenty years and we are faced with a staggering figure of 21.4 million worldwide cases along with 13.2 million fatalities.

If the director of the IARC, Christopher Wild, has provided us with his best assessment of the future then he is no longer invited to the party.

The research done to provide such a report I'm sure was completed by highly intelligent people, probably a panel of experts, top scientists, researchers, doctors, people who's walls hold many more plaques and certificates then mine ever will. Now let me tell you why I cannot accept their look into the crystal ball of our future.

As a current lung cancer survivor, I sometimes replace rational, practical thinking for straight passion in what I do and what I believe in. When I read a projection of this nature, it is a direct assault not only upon me but against every cancer group and organization worldwide. It's an indictment against who we are and what we stand for. If you are going to stand up and say, "Sorry, every mile you walked, every minute you've volunteered along with every dime that you have ever raised or donated to fund one of the many worthy cancer organizations or institutions that provide research that are out there was for nothing." Are you attempting to convince me that in a world of the future we have made no advances in the treatment of various cancers. Is what your saying to me and every other person, family, child, loved one on the face of the earth that we still have no answers, no cure, in fact it is getting worse? Are you telling me that the scientists and researchers who have dedicated their lives, spent the long, long hours in the laboratories the world over have lived a life in vain?

Why would I accept any of that? You might as well try to convince me that fighting for survival was not worth the fight.

The Human Factor.

Whenever I hear the phrase the "The Human Factor," it seems to be meant to conjure up that "We just could win this thing feeling." The feeling that even against overwhelming odds the human spirit will find a way to overcome and be successful. In this instance I believe the human factor has a darker idea behind it. It would seem to me that if we cannot reduce the fatalities from cancer in the future then the human factor is in play. In this case it would mean that the people who benefit more by us not finding a cure have won and are keeping the status quo meanwhile continuing to profit from overpriced treatments and medications billed on your behalf to insurance companies that are happy to pay it and then just raise the patients premiums to pay for it. A finely greased money machine. Let's face it there is plenty of money to be made at the cost of someone else's misery and if someday an executive should happen to find themselves battling a severe case of guilty conscience, Well, we feel bad for old Charlie, but Betty is waiting in the wings to keep the machine running please pass the torch.

If there are no significant advances made, you can bet your bottom dollar it's because curing cancer is not cost effective.

So if the human factor comes into play as it has over the past twenty years then what are some other things that we might have to look forward to in 2030?

To change our future some thing would have to change today. Before we start to discuss the need for alternative energy sources, health care, recycling, food and water safety, we must first discuss a fundamental change in the way we conduct business, starting at the top and working backwards.

First all lobbyist should be removed from the political system and anyone who has taken large amounts of lobby money from places like oil companies should be removed from office. So take the money and the special interest groups out of the politics and your left hopefully with people making decisions based on what is in our best interest. That would be a great advancement for our society.

In the future if we could change the current human factor thought process from "the one who dies with the most stuff wins," to "the one who gives back the most stuff wins," wouldn't that help brighten the future?

In the future, one day, what if we realized that just because we can afford to super size our meals,does not mean that it is in our best interest to do so.

What if in the future we outlawed plastic containers? No more water bottles, plastic storage devices, plastic food containers. Lets go back to glass. Why, you ask. For what's left of our environment. How about this, so we do not continue to add to the floating country the size of Texas that is made up of plastic garbage that has been dumped in the ocean where it gathers in the pacific out of sight out of mind. If you are not aware of this do some homework. If it's Texas sized now, in twenty years what will it be?

In the future if we took a step back and once again began growing our own food at least enough to supplement some of what is being purchased, could we not begin to alter the effects of all the chemicals placed in our food? Bring back the family farm and you will re grow strong communities, teaching our children how to be self sufficient and live a life based off of being good neighbors and not what some mindless bimbo is doing on reality TV. If you grew corn and your neighbor grew wheat maybe you would take the time to get to know them again and arrange a practical arrangement, without the fear of being sewed for stepping on their property.

With a change to the current "Human Factor", maybe we would have a universal healthcare system in this country like the rest of the civilized world. Maybe the wellbeing of each citizen would mean enough to us to disband the health insurance industry altogether and restructure the way the health system works.

Twenty years from now if we changed our thought process from being disposable consumers to being people more in tune with the world around them willing to give up a little in return for a better not necessarily easier life, would we see the results of that effort in our lifetime? Would our children or grandchildren?

Twenty years from now, will having it all, still mean the same thing? Or will decades of having it all finally have caught up with us and forced us to change what we were so unwilling to change when the decision was ours?

One of the greatest things about the country we live in is that we have the freedom to alter our future by simply opening our eyes to the present and as individuals making the necessary changes to our lifestyle, not necessarily the easiest changes to improve our life and health.

Twenty years is the blink of an eye, twenty years passes like the moon on a warm summers night. We could have such an impact in twenty years if we chose to. We could commit to alternative fuel sources, we could eliminate things from our lives that destroy our environment. We could change our eating habits to become healthier. We could change our buying habits to fit a lifestyle that doesn't end up being our downfall.

Twenty years from now we could reduce the cancer fatality rate by twenty five percent and we could do it without the need for new toxic remedies or even finding a cure after the cancer cells have been activated. Many of us talk about it all the time. I am constantly seeing articles referring to three things. Proper diet, exercise, natural vitamin sources. But the fact of the matter is this, you are probably reading this article and others like it because you have a connection to cancer already either you yourself have been effected or someone close to you. You are likely to already be aware of the effect of proper diet on the body, It is getting information out to everyone else who have not been directly effected but could easily find themselves as statistics twenty years from now.

Here's how you can have a direct impact on the future, help those who have not had a direct cancer impact, understand how to help themselves avoid it.

Cancer once it has begun, once the cells are active and spreading is unpredictable at best. Lung cancer is so lethal of a killer that it claims over seventy percent of those diagnosed. If we do not change some things right away, then I'm afraid that the U.N. report will be dead on accurate (please forgive the poor choice of phrase)if not understated. But the things that need to be changed need to come from each one of us. We have to be the ones who take charge of our lives, if we are waiting for the government to intervene then we are fools. If we are waiting for large health care or pharmaceutical companies to save us with a mystical cure, It is not in their best interest to cure it, just find new and expensive ways to treat it. Our best chance for a cure seems to me to be found on one of the many college campuses where research is performed. Of course the fear being that a cure will be found and then tied up and obscured in the red tape world we live in. A cure for cancer, is going to cost some big businesses a whole lot of cash when discovered.

Let's talk about that way to reduce the fatality rate. Cancer cells have the capability of killing you once they become active and begin to multiply and spread. Cancer cells are present in everyone's body but they are held at bay by our immune systems. It is when we have a fundamental breakdown in our immune systems that the flood gates open for the multiplication of cancer cells.

If you allow enough cancer cells to gather and that's when you have problems my friend. Now pay attention please. The best way to reduce cancer fatalities, the best way to fight cancer.....avoid it. You cannot avoid having bad cells in your body, what you can avoid is letting your immune system go to hell and opening yourself up for an attack.

For the future, let's just concentrate on what we know and what we can control. First of all, you can greatly reduce many life threatening illnesses including cancer by keeping your bodies ph balance level. If you began today to make healthier dietary choices and began to reduce your intake of fast foods or questionably prepared foods you would be taking a step in the right direction. If you started questioning where the meat you purchase comes from, how it is raised, how it is prepared for market and what type of chemicals are used in raising it, you would be making a step in the right direction. Farm fresh does not substitute for organic. I believe and I'm not alone, that the immune system is effected greatly by our intake of various chemicals in our industrial farm produced foods. Take control of what you eat. Reduce the amount of coffee you drink maybe supplement green tea for coffee. You need to find ways to reduce the amount of acid you are adding to your body. Cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment. Meat is also a high acid contributor which is why fish and chicken are considered better for you then beef and pork.

Vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants are vital to helping grow and unleash the cells in our bodies that kill things like cancer cells keeping them in check.

Exercise and sunlight, these two things can not be understated. Unfortunately, we have found a way to make exercise a multi billion dollar industry and we as a society have changed the definition of exercise to joining a gym or buying a ton of equipment. Let me help you out with this, walk, learn some deep breathing exercises, cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Walk and preferably take a walk in the sunshine, the body needs sunshine it helps keep everything in check. What else does the body need? Water. We are organic beings and if you look at it in that manner, Sunshine, water proper intake of minerals avoidance of harmful toxins. Couple some dietary alterations with finding ways to reduce stress in your life and your well on your way to avoiding becoming a 2030 statistic.

If in places where it were possible we could alter our over eating and poor choice eating habits I think we reduce cancer as well as other major disease fatalities greatly. If we remain too busy to care, too busy to teach our children better habits, too busy to stop and look at the world we have forged for ourselves, then I am afraid that everything will be in vain. I'm afraid we will visit a future where over thirteen million people dieing from cancer alone will be just a small piece of a much larger problem.

I am not asking you to donate money, I'm not asking you to walk a marathon. I'm not asking you to completely change or live your life afraid that the sky might be falling. What I am asking for is that you open your mind to finding better ways to live in the future by making small changes now starting with your health and the health of the people you are responsible for. Then let's look at the way we do things, the way we govern ourselves and our actions and the things we need to do to reduce cancer by fifty percent in the year 2050.

Natural Cancer Treatment Vs Conventional Cancer Treatment

During anti cancer treatment (Conventional cancer treatment), it is difficult to protect the healthy cells of side effects caused by the drugs administered. Although the effects of treatment vary according to each patient and the medications used, all cancer patients suffer adverse effects of treatment that affect their skin, look and internal organs. An important part of the work of clinicians and patients is to precisely manage those potential side effects. The role of this article is to summarize the main side effects caused by different types of conventional cancer treatments and potential natural treatment (including nutrition, remedies and immunotherapy). Let's start with the conventional methods.

There are four (4) types of anti cancer treatment:

Surgery - Surgery, the oldest form of cancer treatment, is used in cancer treatment either to remove only the tumor, or the entire organ. However, no matter how successful a surgery can be, it provokes one or all the following side effects:

Radiotherapy - Radiation therapy is the use of ionizing radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. It can be administered externally (external beam radiotherapy) or internally (brachytherapy). Unfortunately, radiation can cause severe blood changes including drop in production of new blood cells, nausea, anemia and vomiting. Other short/long-term side effects of radiotherapy may include:

- Irritation and burning of the skin
- Infertility - radiation to the testicles can cause permanent loss of sperm production
- Fatigue is a common effect of radiation. It may be linked to anemia or weakened immune system
- Brain disorder - radiation therapy to the brain can cause changes in brain function that can lead to memory loss, lower sexual desire, etc.
- Skin disorder - radiation therapy can make your skin become tender or sensitive. The skin may also become dry and itchy. Peeling of the skin may occur.
- Second cancers - the radiation itself can cause Second cancers (metastases)
- Erectile dysfunction - radiation therapy to the pelvis can damage the arteries and nerves that supply the penis and cause problems with erections

Chemotherapy - Chemotherapy is a systemic treatment, its effects affect both healthy cells as cancer cells. Generally, these effects depend to a large proportion of drugs prescribed and their dosage. The anti-cancer drugs quickly affect cell division. This means that the white blood cells, which fight against infection, are also affected.

This combination of factors explains why patients are more prone to infections and fatigue or even anemia during cancer treatment. Similarly, this change of cell division causes hair loss or alopecia. Intestinal disorders such as diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, and finally lesions in the mouth (mucositis) can be observed.

Hormonotherapy - Side effects caused by hormonotherapy depend largely on the type of treatment used and prescribed medicines. One of the drugs in hormonotherapy is called Tamoxifen: it has the effect of depriving cancer cells of estrogen. The Tamoxifen can cause hot flashes, irritation or vaginal discharge, nausea and irregular menstruation.

During and after cancer treatment (conventional treatment)

Myth: Good People Don't Get Cancer.

Breast Cancer Cause, Control And Cure For The Benefit Of Humankind

Modern medicine is aging with breath taking advances in cancer care with increasing awareness, preventing, detection, therapy, research and symptom management. Last 15 years has been a revolution. It is likely to fight Cancer out by getting an early detection especially at a pre cancer stage thus yielding best cure with much shorter treatment time, lesser cost, lesser body insult.

Am I at risk for breast cancer? Breast cancer is the most common malignancy-affecting woman in North America and Europe. Every woman is at risk for breast cancer. Close to 200,000 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in the United States in 2001. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American women behind lung cancer. The lifetime risk of any particular woman getting breast cancer is about 1 in 8 although the lifetime risk of dying from breast cancer is much lower at 1 in 28. The diagnosis once confirmed by Doctor shocks in such a way that not only the patient suffers but entire family suffers the shock. Thus the patient and family both suffer differently and that adds to the total burden of cancer related illness.

Know your breast: The breast is a collection of glands and fatty tissue that lies between the skin and the chest wall. The glands inside the breast produce milk after a woman has a baby. Each gland is called as lobule and many such lobules make up a lobe. There are 15 to 20 lobes in each breast. The milk gets to the nipple from the glands by way of tubes called ducts. The glands and ducts get bigger when a breast is filled with milk, but the tissue that is most responsible for the size and shape the breast is the fatty tissue. There are also blood vessels and lymph vessels in the breast. Lymph is a clear liquid waste product that gets drained out of the breast into lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small, pea-sized pieces of tissue that filter and clean the lymph. Most lymph nodes that drain the breast are under the arm in what is called the axilla.

Risk factors for breast cancer: They can be divided into those that you cannot change and those that you can change. Some factors that increase your risk of breast cancer that you cannot alter include being a woman, getting older, having a family history (having a mother, sister, or daughter with breast cancer doubles your risk), having a previous history of breast cancer, having had radiation therapy to the chest region, being Caucasian, getting your periods young (before 12 years old), having your menopause late (after 50 years old), never having children or having them when you are older than 30, and having a genetic mutation that increases your risk. Genetic mutations for breast cancer have become a hot topic of research lately. Between 3-10% of breast cancers may be related to changes in either the gene BRCA1 or the gene BRCA2.

Women can inherit these mutations from their parents and it may be worth testing for either mutation if a woman has a particularly strong family history of breast cancer (meaning multiple relatives affected, especially if they are under 50 years old when they get the disease). If a woman is found to carry either mutation, she has a 50% chance of getting breast cancer before she is 70. Family members may elect to get tested to see if they carry the mutation as well. If a woman does have the mutation, she can get more rigorous screening or even undergo preventive (prophylactic) mastectomies to decrease her chances of contracting cancer. The decision to get tested is a highly personal one that should be discussed with a doctor who is trained in counseling patients about genetic testing.

Certain factors which increase a woman's risk of breast cancer can be altered including taking hormone replacement therapy (long term use of estrogens with progesterone for menopause symptoms slightly increases your risk), taking birth control pills (a very slight increased risk that disappears in women who have stopped them for over 10 years), not breastfeeding, drinking 2 to 5 alcoholic drinks a day, being overweight (especially after menopause), and not exercising. All of these modifiable risk factors are not nearly as important as gender, age, and family history, but they are things that a woman can control that may reduce her chances of developing a breast malignancy. Remember that all risk factors are based on probabilities, and even someone without any risk factors can still get breast cancer. Proper screening and early detection are our best weapons in reducing the mortality associated with this disease.

What are the signs of breast cancer? Unfortunately, the early stages of breast cancer may not have any symptoms. This is why it is important to follow screening recommendations. As a tumor grows in size, it can produce a variety of symptoms including: lump or thickening in the breast or underarm, change in size or shape of the breast, nipple discharge or nipple turning inward, redness or scaling of the skin or nipple, ridges or pitting of the breast skin

Can you prevent breast cancer? The individual cannot control the most important risk factors for the development of breast cancer. There are some risk factors that are associated with an increased risk, but there is not a clear cause and effect relationship. In no way can strong recommendations be made like the cause and effect relationship seen with tobacco and lung cancer. There are a few risk factors that may be modified by a woman that potentially could influence the development of breast cancer. If possible, a woman should avoid long-term hormone replacement therapy, have children before age 30, breastfeed, avoid weight gain through exercise and proper diet, and limit alcohol consumption to 1 drink a day or less. For women already at a high risk, their risk of developing breast cancer can be reduced by about 50% by taking a drug called Tamoxifen for five years. Tamoxifen has some common side effects (like hot flashes and vaginal discharge), which are not serious and some uncommon side effects (like blood clots, pulmonary embolus, stroke, and uterine cancer) which are life threatening. Tamoxifen isn't widely used for prevention, but may be useful in some cases.

There are limited data suggesting that vitamin A may protect against breast cancer but further research is needed before it can be recommended for prevention. Other things being investigated include phyto estrogens (naturally occurring estrogens that are in high numbers in soy), vitamin E, vitamin C, and other drugs. Further testing of these substances is also needed before they can be recommended for breast cancer prevention. Right now, the most important thing any woman can do to decrease her risk of dying from breast cancer is to have regular mammogram screening, perform breast self-exams once a month. Follow a few, easy steps, you will soon know what is normal for you and will quickly be aware of any changes. If you find a lump or other change, note down where it is and make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible.

Question for young women's are how to look? Well it is medically suggested that you stand up straight in front of a mirror with your arms loosely by your sides. Raise your arms above your head and move from side to side so you can see your breasts in the mirror, from different angles. What should you look for? A change in the size of either breast, change in the shape or position of nipple, bleeding or discharge from the nipples, unusual dimpling or puckering.
How do you feel for changes? Lie flat on your back with your head on a pillow. Put a folded towel under the shoulder on the side of the breast you are checking. This helps to spread the tissue so that it is easier to feel. Examine one breast at a time. Put the hand on the same side of the breast that you are going to examine under your head. With your other hand flat and fingers together, use the flats of your fingers to feel around the breast in small, circular movements, in an anticlockwise direction. Cover the whole of the breast including the nipple. Check your armpit for lumps in the same way, starting in the hollow and moving down towards the breast.

Now examine the other breast in the same way. If you think you have found something, feel the same area on the opposite breast. If they are the same it's probably just your shape, but if you are at all worried, do visit your doctor. Breast cancer happens when cells in the breast begin to grow out of control and can then invade nearby tissues or spread throughout the body. Large collections of this out of control tissue are called tumors. However, some tumors are not really cancer because they cannot spread or threaten someone's life. These are called benign tumors. The tumors that can spread throughout the body or invade nearby tissues are considered cancer and are called malignant tumors. Theoretically, any of the types of tissue in the breast can form a cancer, but usually it comes from either the ducts or the glands. Because it may take months to years for a tumor to get large enough to feel in the breast, we screen for tumors with mammograms, which can sometimes see disease before we can feel it.

The earlier that a breast cancer is found, the more likely it is that treatment can be curable. Screening mammograms are simply x-rays of each breast. The breast is placed between two plates for a few seconds while the x-rays are taken. If something appears abnormal, or better views are needed, magnified views or specially angled films are taken during the mammogram. Mammograms often detect tumors before they can be felt and they can also identify tiny specks of calcium that could be an early sign of cancer. Regular screening mammograms can decrease the mortality of breast cancer by 30%. Woman should get a yearly mammogram starting at age 40 (although some groups recommend starting at 50), and women with a genetic mutation that increases their risk or a strong family history may want to begin even earlier. Between the ages of 20 and 39, every woman should have a clinical breast exam every 3 years and after age 40 every woman should have a clinical breast exam done each year.

There are some experimental screening modalities that are currently being studied. These include MRI, ductal lavage, ultrasound, optical tomography, PET scan, and digital mammograms. Depending on the results of the mammograms and/or ultrasounds, your doctors may recommend that you get a biopsy. A biopsy is the only way to know for sure if you have cancer, because it allows your doctors to get cells that can be examined under a microscope. There are different types of biopsies; they differ on how much tissue is removed. Some biopsies use a very fine needle, while others use thicker needles or even require a small surgical procedure to remove more tissue. Your team of doctors will decide which type of biopsy you need depending on your particular breast mass. Once the tissue is removed, a pathologist will review the specimen. The pathologist can tell if it is cancer or not; and if it is cancerous, then the pathologist will characterize it by what type of tissue it arose from, how abnormal it looks (known as the grade), whether or not it is invading surrounding tissues, and if the entire lump was excised, the pathologist can tell if there are any cancer cells left at the borders (also known as the margins). The pathologist will also test the cancer cells for the presence of estrogen and progesterone receptors as well as a receptor known as HER-2/neu. Basic 4 stages of breast cancer are called as

Stage 0 (called carcinoma in situ) Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) refers to abnormal cells lining a gland in the breast. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) refers to abnormal cells lining a duct.

Stage I - early stage breast cancer where the tumor is less that 2 cm across and hasn't spread beyond the breast

Stage II - early stage breast cancer where the tumor is either less than 2 cm across and has spread to the lymph nodes under the arm; or the tumor is between 2 and 5 cm (with or without spread to the lymph nodes under the arm); or the tumor is greater than 5 cm and hasn't spread outside the breast

Stage III - locally advanced breast cancer where the tumor is greater than 5 cm across and has spread to the lymph nodes under the arm; or the cancer is extensive in the underarm lymph nodes; or the cancer has spread to lymph nodes near the breastbone or to other tissues near the breast

Stage IV - metastatic breast cancer where the cancer has spread outside the breast to other organs in the body

Depending on the stage of your cancer, your doctor may want additional tests to see if you have metastatic disease. If you have a stage III cancer, you will probably get a chest x-ray, CT scan and bone scan to look for metastases. Each patient is an individual and your doctors will decide what is necessary to adequately stage your cancer.
What are the treatments for breast cancer?

Surgery: Almost all women with breast cancer will have some type of surgery in the course of their treatment while some women will be candidates for what is called breast conservation therapy (BCT) where surgeons perform a lumpectomy which means they remove the tumor with a little bit of breast tissue around it but do not remove the entire breast. Some patients will have a sentinel lymph node biopsy procedure first to determine if a formal lymph node dissection is required. Sometimes, the surgeon will remove a larger part (but not the whole breast), and this is called a segmental or partial mastectomy. Most patients with DCIS that have a lumpectomy are treated with radiation therapy to prevent the local recurrence of DCIS.More advanced breast cancers are usually treated with a modified radical mastectomy. Modified radical mastectomy means removing the entire breast and dissecting the lymph nodes under the arm.

Chemotherapy: is the use of anti-cancer drugs that go throughout the entire body. The higher the stage of cancer you have, the more important it is that you receive chemotherapy; however, even stage I patients may benefit from chemotherapy in certain cases. In early stage patients, the risk of recurrence may be small, and thus the benefits of the chemotherapy are even smaller. There are many different chemotherapy drugs, and they are usually given in combinations for 3 to 6 months after you receive your surgery. Depending on the type of chemotherapy regimen you receive, you may get medication every 3 or 4 weeks; and you may have to go to a clinic to get the chemotherapy because many of the drugs have to be given through a vein. Two of the most common regimens are AC (doxorubicin and cycolphosphamide) for 3 months or CMF (cycolphosphamide, methotrexate, and fluorouracil) for 6 months. There are advantages and disadvantages to each of the different regimens that your medical oncologist will discuss with you. Based on your own health, your personal values and wishes, and side effects you may wish to avoid, you can work with your doctors to come up with the best regimen for your lifestyle.

Radiotherapy: uses high-energy rays (similar to x-rays) to kill cancer cells. It comes from an external source, and it requires patients to come in 5 days a week for up to 6 weeks to a radiation therapy treatment center. The treatment takes just a few minutes, and it is painless. Radiation therapy is used in all patients who receive breast conservation therapy (BCT). It is also recommended for patients after a mastectomy that had large tumors, lymph node involvement, or close/positive margins after the surgery. Radiation is important in reducing the risk of local recurrence and is often offered in more advanced cases to kill tumor cells that may be living in lymph nodes.

Hormonal Therapy: When the pathologist examines your tumor specimen, he or she finds out if the tumor is expressing estrogen and progesterone receptors. Patients whose tumors express estrogen receptors are candidates for therapy with an estrogen-blocking drug called Tamoxifen. Tamoxifen is taken by pill form for 5 years after your surgery. This drug has been shown to drastically reduce your risk of recurrence if your tumor expresses estrogen receptors. However, there are side effects commonly associated with Tamoxifen including weight gain, hot flashes and vaginal discharge that patients may be bothered by. There are also very uncommon side effects like blood clots, strokes, or uterine cancer that may scare patients from choosing to take it. You need to remember that your chances of having a recurrence of your cancer are usually higher than your chances of having a serious problem with Tamoxifen, but the decision to undergo hormonal therapy is a personal one that you should make with your doctor. There are also newer drugs, called aromatase inhibitors that act by decreasing your body's supply of estrogen; these drugs are reserved for patients who have already gone through menopause. Talk to your doctors about these new therapies.

Biologic Therapy: The pathologist also examines your tumor for the presence of HER-2/neu over expression. A compound called Herceptin (or Trastuzumab) is a substance that blocks this receptor and helps stop the breast cancer from growing.

Follow-up testing: Once a patient has been treated for breast cancer, they need to be closely followed for a recurrence. At first, you will have follow-up visits every 3-4 months. The longer you are free of disease, the less often you will have to go for checkups. After 5 years, you could see your doctor once a year. You should have a mammogram of the treated and untreated breasts every year. Because having had breast cancer is a risk factor for getting it again, having your mammograms done every year is extremely important. If you are taking Tamoxifen, it is important that you get a pelvic exam each year and report any abnormal vaginal bleeding to your doctor.

Household Cleaning Supplies

I honestly believe deep down inside of me that all the household cleaning over the years of my beloved mother using all those harmful household cleaning supplies such as Ajax, Windex, 409, Chlorox bleach, Pine Sol, and ammonia to name a few, played a role in her death stemming from pancreatic cancer. With pancreatic cancer, the greatest causative factors with this kind of cancer (the deadliest) is smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol (which my mother unwisely did plenty of in her lifetime). But the fumes from these harmful household cleaning supplies also played a major role as my mother never detoxified her body in her fifty-one years of existence on this earth in this last lifetime.

Commercial household cleaning supplies are caustic and immune debilitating. When you inhale these products, they lower your immunity. Everything you inhale (smell) goes directly to your bloodstream and therefore travels throughout the entire body.

It is better, safer, and wiser to switch to more earth-friendly and biodegradable household cleaning supplies (i.e., Ecover, Bon Ami, Seventh Generation, Earth Friendly Products, Country Save, Dr. Bronner's, etc.).

When cleaning, always make sure the windows are open and that air is circulating in your home. If you have an ozone machine, run it while cleaning. An ozone machine is your best bet.

A lot of mechanics develop cancer as they are exposed to many harmful chemicals and fumes. Mechanics deal with serious toxicity everyday, smelling/inhaling all those poisonous chemical fumes. Because they have been working around these fumes for many years, they actually become numb, olfactory or smell-wise, to the harmful fumes.


The Los Angeles Times reported in the late 1990s that if a woman has taken birth control pills for more than ten years of her life, there's an 80% chance of her developing some kind of female reproductive cancer. This is true!

Birth control pills play a big role in female reproductive cancers. Women would be wise to just accept the fact that they are female by nature and God made them to have (deliver) babies and they should stop trying to compete with and be like men. In attempting to stop or prevent life (birth control), they are ending up losing their very own lives. And the birth control pills cause cancer in areas of the body that denote femininity (breasts, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, uterus and vagina). This is a form of language here. You have disease and female organ(s) which basically means your disease is specifically related to an issue of femaleness or femininity, that's why the disease manifests in these "female" organs. In attempting to be like and compete with men/males, females compromise their feminine integrity and goddess nature which "eats them up" (anger, frustration, sadness, etc.) inside. When the cancer appears in any female organ, it serves as a sign or sensor that the problem lies on a deeper metaphysical level pertaining to emotions, thoughts and attitude.

What about all the synthetic scents from colognes and perfumes? Are they cancer-causing? You bet they are! Nowadays, I don't understand how people can purchase perfumes and colognes and not be concerned with what the ingredients are. These containers (and the glass bottles) of designer colognes, perfumes and fragrances do not even list the ingredients. While perfumes and colognes may not be a food, they are being consumed by the body. Anything you put on the skin is consumed and gets into the body (the blood).

I have written a few articles about the detrimental effect of using commercial brand sanitary napkins which are manufactured with the use of organochlorine (dioxin) for bleaching purposes. This harmful chemical finds its way into the female vaginal orifice and latches on to estrogen receptor sites and proliferates. This is a precursor to a female reproductive cancer.

Brain cancer has greatly escalated over the years. Is there any surprise considering how much time people spend on cellular phones? Cellular phones emit serious radiation. It would be wise to purchase a cellular phone diode to place on your phone. Diodes convert radioactive energy (radiation) into beneficial bionic energy. Every cellular phone should have a diode on it. Actually, anything emitting radiation should have some kind or form of diode on it.

Microwave ovens play a major role in the development of cancer. I have been saying this for some time now. After doing the research on microwave ovens back in 1996, I got rid of the brand new microwave oven I owned and once used in my Gardena apartment. I sat it out one night and the next morning it was gone. These ovens are dangerous! Yes, they may cook your food fast but you pay a dear price for their use in the end.

Normal cooking causes food molecules to spin to the right. Everything in nature naturally spins or moves to the right. The earth spins from right to left on its axis while revolving around the sun. Track runners run from right to left on a track field. Healthy cells spin from right to left.

But when you cook your so-called food in a microwave oven, a strange thing happens. The molecules spin in reverse from left to right. This is the SAME direction cancerous cells spin in. Food out of a microwave oven is directly cancerous! Microwave ovens cause an implosion in your food, especially meats. This means that instead of the heat penetrating into your food, the heat begins in the middle of your food. This is dangerous, People!

If you insist on still using a microwave oven, please lace it with crystals, diodes, and plants. Crystals that are great for neutralizing radiation include Covalite, Smoky Quartz, Fluorite, Lepidolite, Sodalite, Black Tourmline, Black Obsidian, and Jet, to name a few.

The Earth that we foolishly destroy (for financial gain, in most cases) supplies us with so much for our good. I am so thankful to Mother Earth and what she provides for us to protect us from ourselves (wicked inventions).

With over 700 chemical ingredients in them, cigarettes are a contract with premature and painful death. You are just outright foolish to smoke cigarettes if you do. There's absolutely NO nutritional value derived from this insidious product. The same thing applies to alcohol and beer. These two things play the greatest role in the development of pancreatic cancer (which is no joke, People) followed by liver and lung cancer.

And these wire-strapped bras women wear - they inhibit circulation in the chest/breast area. These bras cause toxins to be trapped in the breast area. Therefore, the Body Intelligence causes internal trash bags called tumors to develop in an attempt to hold all of the waste in one spot so as to prevent these toxins from circulating throughout the entire body. And using underarm antiperspirants doesn't help in this scenario. The chemicals in antiperspirants causes the sweat gland ducts to ball up and shut down, and because of this, toxins are not eliminated via the lymph nodes via the underarms, but are trapped in the breast/chest area. This plays a pivotal role in the physical manifestation or development of breast cancer.

Those daily 3-6 cups of coffee will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in the physical development of stomach cancer and/or cancer of the esophagus.

Excessive ejaculation of sperm or semen without replenishing the nutrients will lead to a serious loss of precious minerals, especially zinc, which is pivotal in the physical manifestation of prostate cancer.

In re prostate cancer, tight underwear is also indicative here. Metaphysically, misogyny or too much "yang" or masculine energy not balanced by the female energy or "yin" fosters the physical development of prostate cancer.

Governmental Ban On Cancer Remedies

The United States Government plays a role in the high rates of cancer and cancer deaths amongst American citizenry. By banning certain effective alternative treatments, the U.S. Government via its medical military wing - FDA (Food and Drug Administration) causes many people to perish from cancer.

U.S. citizenship is predicated upon the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution. U.S. citizens, property of the corporate United States (defined territorially in Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17 of the U.S. Constitution) pursuant to Section 4, Article 2 of the Constitution, can be regulated by the U.S. Congress and are. U.S. citizens (people) are property of the corporate United States and Congress can make all needful rules and regulations for its property. The American people are regulated by the FDA. And you have the nerves to talk freedom, talking about you have freedom in America and Djehuty Ma'at-Ra doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. You're free? Oh really? Are you free to get in your car without valid registration tags on your license plates without getting pulled over by some law enforcement agency? Hell no! Are you free to work your job without paying federal and state taxes that do not support you? Hell no! Are you free to get on an airplane without showing government-issued identification? Hell no! Are you free to have a baby in the hospital without a birth certificate being issued? Hell no!

Americans are not free. They are only free to think they are free. Americans are regulated and heavily so. They must account for everything. American citizens must keep books and records like corporations. Why? Because they are in fact corporations - living corporations (corporate entities).

When it comes to abortion (infanticide, murder) the government says "It's your body and you have a choice." But when it comes to trying an alternative cancer treatment, the government says "It's not your body and you don't have a choice." Now ain't that a bitch?

With the approval of the government (FDA), you can take birth control pills and other harmful pharmaceutical grade drugs that have serious side effects with the greatest side effect being "death", but when it comes to natural and alternative cancer treatments and remedies, the government (FDA) bans these practices and products under the premise that they are harmful to human health. The FDA has some damn nerves talking about what is harmful in one breath and then turning around and approving the sale of cigarettes that destroy the health of smokers and nonsmokers.

How are you going to approve the sale of alcohol, pharmaceutical drugs and cigarettes, which the FDA has done, and then turn around and ban laetrile (Vitamin B-17), ozone/oxygen therapy, and Royal Raymond Rife technologies which help to eradicate cancer?

You see, the government wants you to become and stay sick. It's easier to control and regulate sick people. Sick people are weak people.

Royal Raymond Rife created a machine back in the 1930s. This machine healed people of cancer and other fatal diseases. The U.S. Government came in and confiscated this machine.

Dr. Ed McCabe is considered the king of Oxygen or Ozone. Ozone is actually oxygen to the third power. Ozone is three molecules of oxygen whereas oxygen is only two molecules of oxygen. Ozone kills all viruses and negative bacteria and microorganisms. Parasites and worms hate oxygen. Nothing hates oxygen more than cancerous cells. Cells cannot remain cancerous in the presence of oxygen or ozone.

Ed McCabe started helping people heal from the most fatal and insidious diseases (i.e., so-called A.I.D.S., cancer, genital herpes, etc.) with the use of oxygen therapies. The governmental authorities found out about McCabe's great works and came after him. The man has been in and out of jail all because he is helping people to heal and stay alive - a most beautiful thing. But because his modality is not approved by the government, he's accused of violating various laws and regulations of the government. Now what's more important: bullshit political laws and regulations or saving lives?

The same thing has happened to Dave Hinkson, founder of WaterOz, who was also helping people to heal from very insidious diseases and conditions. Dave is now serving time in federal prison after being framed by federal government officials (F.B.I.) who said Dave threatened them. This is blatant tyranny.

And the cowardly American people sit back and just let this medical tyranny take place. I thought you had some say with the payment of your tax dollars to the government? Your government does not give a damn about you. It is only concerned with its own existence. It is only concerned with power and at the expense of human lives.

The Declaration of Independence itself gives the American people the right to dissolve the present government when that government no longer serves the needs and best interests of the people and to set up a new government in its stead. But how can you expect people who are dependent upon the government to dissolve it? It's pretty difficult to dissolve government when you're dependent upon government for a welfare check, social security check, or disability check.

You see People, it's politically correct to talk about finding a cure for cancer but it's politically incorrect to actually find a cure for cancer.

However, there's no need to find a cure for cancer because the cure (answer) is already here and government can't do anything about it. Modification of thoughts, diet and lifestyle, and consuming the natural vegetation of the Earth is the cure for any and all diseases.

Now some folks ask me can cancer be injected into you or given to you. The answer is emphatically yes. Singer Bob Marley and Jack Ruby are two of the most notable figures in history who died of cancer being injected into them.

Neil Bush, brother of President George W. Bush, Jr., and Carl Colby, son of the late C.I.A. director William Colby, posed as writers for a music magazine and came to visit Marley while he was hiding in seclusion after a failed C.I.A. assassination attempt on Marley while performing live on stage. Marley was given a pair of boots as a gift that had a copper-like wire embedded in the boot.

Marley was one of many singers (including John Lennon, Mama Cass Elliott, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplan, Peter Tosh, etc.) who were covertly targeted by the U.S. Government because of either politically conscious songs and lyrics, political involvement and/or views (anti-government practices and policies, esp. war), or their influence on the American youth. And would government really want to kill entertainers? Jack Ruby, the shooter of Lee Harvey Oswald (who was framed with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy) was injected with a carcinogenic substance while in jail. This was "their" way of silencing Ruby (before he was to give testimony) and making sure the truth about the Kennedy assassination would never be exposed to the American people. Jack Ruby was murdered in jail. There's a scene in the closing part of the movie "Ruby" starring Danny Aiello where Ruby is screaming from his jail cell, "They're killing me! They're killing me!" The man was screaming for his life. Ruby was a victim of medical liquid assassination just like civil rights attorney Johnny Cochran, former Nation of Islam minister Khalid Abdul Muhammad, Bob Marley, J. Edgar Hoover, James Earl Ray (who did not shoot Martin Luther King, Jr.), Marilyn Monroe, Pope John Paul I, John Belushi, and Ian Fleming of James Bond fame.
